WATER CONSERVATION BEST PRACTICES

FVCA is undertaking an effort to reduce water use in our homes.  Water is the most expensive portion of your dues, and rates and use continue to rise.  In the average home, toilet flushing, showers, and clothes washing account for almost 60% of water use.  To help our effort, please consider the following adjustments to your daily routines:

  1. Make sure your home is leak free.  Listen for running water.  Blue Dye tablets to check for toilet leaks are available from the association.

  2. When washing dishes and clothes, run only full loads.

  3. Minimize toilet flushing.

  4. Place a weighted 1 pint jar in your toilet tank to reduce the flushing volume.

  5. Brush your teeth with the water off.

  6. Take a shower rather than taking a bath. Showers typically use half the water.

  7. Limit showers to 5 minutes.  When running the shower to heat the water up, limit how long you wait.  Warm water should be at the shower in less than a minute.

  8. While waiting for shower to warm up, collect the cold water in a bucket to use for plants.

  9. When washing vegetables, do so in a bowl of water and use the dirty water left over to water plants.

  10. Don’t overwater house and patio plants.

  11. Keep a jug of cold water in the fridge so you don’t run the tap to get cold water.

If you replace your toilet, purchase a lo-flow dual flush toilet.  If you replace bath or kitchen faucets use water saving aerators.
